School Visits

Girls testing the dance-bot's moves at a Robogals workshop (2012).

Robogals UNSW arranges for our university student volunteers to visit girls schools to run LEGO robotics workshops. In these fun and educational classes, students learn the basics of engineering, robotics and programming using LEGO Mindstorms NXT kits. This also prepares students to enter school robotics competitions such as FIRST LEGO League and Robocup Junior.

Some comments from teachers after the workshop:

'For many of my students who participated in Robogals last year, it was the highlight of the year. It was wonderful to see students so enthused about learniing to use ICT in a fun and practical program. The girls grew in confidence and many of them have shown increased interest in using our Lego 'dacta' kits and in using ICT in general. The excited buzz and deep concentration in the robogals lab was a joy to watch and an inspiration to me as a teacher - we can find activities which will absorb our students and enthuse them to challenge themselves in ways they never imagined possible!'

'The girls really enjoyed doing something that the boys were not doing as well. They loved building the robots and using the computers to program them. The day opened up discussions back at school about engineering as a career, and the many different roles that engineers take in the workforce.'
